How to Choose Elevator Shoes: The Kosen Style and Fit Guide

Compare Kosen Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter elevator shoes by style, hidden height boost, fit and occasion. A practical buyer's guide.

The right elevator shoes are the ones you will actually enjoy wearing. Start with the clothes you own, the occasions you need shoes for, and the shape that fits your feet. Then compare the hidden lift, cushioning and sizing guidance. A bigger height number by itself does not tell you which pair will work best.

At Kosen, we design and manufacture elevator shoes with height-boosting layers built into the footwear. This guide compares our five main men's styles: Mercury, Venus, Saturn, Mars and Jupiter. It is intended to help you narrow your options rather than to claim that one model suits everyone.

Which style of elevator shoes should you choose?

Each Kosen collection has a different exterior, but the goal remains consistent: discreet height in footwear that fits naturally into your wardrobe. The quickest way to choose is by the setting in which you expect to wear the shoes most often.

Compare Kosen elevator shoes by style and listed height increase
Model Look Height boost Consider it for
Mercury Minimalist low-top 2 inches Everyday and smart-casual outfits
Venus Breathable, athletic 2 inches Relaxed and sporty clothing
Saturn Retro running style 2 inches Denim, casual jackets and vintage-inspired outfits
Mars Bold, chunky sneaker 2 inches Contemporary streetwear
Jupiter Formal dress shoe 2.3 inches Suits, weddings and business attire

These are the listed model specifications. Available colors and sizes can change, so consult the product page for the exact pair you choose.

For an understated everyday sneaker: Mercury

Mercury is the straightforward place to start when your wardrobe includes jeans, chinos, overshirts and simple jackets. The low-top profile looks familiar, with the height-boosting structure hidden inside. White keeps an outfit fresh, while black and deeper colors sit comfortably with darker trousers.

Mercury White works well with beige chinos or blue denim. Mercury Black provides a darker alternative with a contrasting light sole. Both are listed with a 2-inch lift. A minimalist shape does not automatically mean the fit will suit every foot, so check the product's specific measurements.

For an athletic or retro outfit: Venus and Saturn

Choose Venus when you prefer a breathable knit look with a light, sporty appearance. It works with relaxed trousers, weekend clothing and casual outfits where a dress shoe would feel out of place. Compare Venus White and Venus Black to see how the silhouette changes with color.

Saturn takes a different approach. Its retro-inspired lines are closer to classic running shoes, making it a natural partner for denim, casual coats and understated vintage influences. Explore Saturn Navy or Saturn Olive.

If you have found narrow sneakers uncomfortable in the past, compare the size charts and the shape of Venus and Saturn with Mercury. Do not assume the same size will feel identical across all three models.

For a bolder outfit: Mars

Mars is designed for a more expressive look. Its chunky sneaker profile works with relaxed trousers, overshirts and urban casual clothing. The hidden lift is still built into the footwear, but the exterior style makes more of a visual statement than Mercury.

Consider Mars Black if you often wear dark denim and neutral jackets, or Mars White for a lighter contrast. If you want a sneaker that blends quietly into smart-casual clothes, Mercury may be the simpler option.

For a wedding, business event or tailored outfit: Jupiter

Sometimes sneakers are not right for the dress code. Jupiter is our formal option, with a polished shape suited to suits, tailored trousers and special occasions. Jupiter Black has a listed 2.3-inch lift, which is different from the 2-inch lift on our main sneaker models.

Jupiter's dress-shoe design is intended for formal clothing rather than casual sneaker outfits.

Choose based on the actual event and the way your trousers fall over the shoe. For a formal occasion, try the shoes with the socks and trousers you plan to wear before the date of the event.

What does a 2-inch height boost mean?

An elevator shoe has a hidden raised structure built inside. Kosen's sneakers are generally listed with a 2-inch height increase, approximately 5.1 cm, while Jupiter is listed at 2.3 inches, approximately 5.8 cm. These numbers describe the model's intended height boost, not a guarantee that the difference versus your existing shoes will be exactly the same.

Ordinary shoes already add some height. If you want to compare your new pair with your current sneakers, measure both while standing against the same wall with consistent posture. For more detail, read how elevator shoes work. That guide also explains how the internal lift differs from a visibly taller outsole.

How to choose a comfortable size

A hidden lift changes the internal construction of a shoe, so size and shape matter. Use the size guide for the exact model rather than relying only on your usual number. The goal is a secure heel, room around the toes and a natural walking feel.

  1. Check the model-specific chart. A size that works in Mercury is not necessarily identical in Venus, Saturn or Jupiter.
  2. Consider both length and width. A shoe can be long enough but still feel narrow over the forefoot.
  3. Try it with your regular socks. Lace the shoes securely and check for pressure points.
  4. Walk indoors on a clean surface. Notice your heel, toe room and whether the shoe feels secure during a natural stride.
  5. Read the policy for your country. US shipping, exchanges and returns are free under Kosen's stated conditions. International policies vary.

Comfort depends on the whole shoe, your foot shape and your routine. If a pair pinches, rubs or causes pain, do not assume you have to force an adjustment period.

Choose a color you can wear often

Think of the outfits already in your closet. White sneakers pair naturally with denim and lighter chinos. Black works with charcoal, navy and dark trousers. Navy and gray can be useful alternatives when you want something softer than black, while brown and olive introduce warmer or more muted tones.

Also consider the number of occasions where you expect to use the pair. One versatile everyday sneaker may serve you better than several shoes bought for rare events. For five practical outfit examples, see our elevator-sneaker styling guide.

Elevator shoes or a separate height-increasing insole?

Elevator shoes contain the lift as part of the original design. A separate height insole is added to footwear that may not have been built to accommodate it. The extra insert can reduce space above your foot and affect heel hold, depending on the particular shoes.

Neither option is universally right for everyone. Compare the complete fit, the intended use and the appearance. Our elevator shoes versus separate insoles guide explains the tradeoffs in more detail.

Questions to ask before buying

Can someone tell I am wearing elevator shoes?

An internal lift can be discreet, especially in a balanced sneaker silhouette. It is not possible to guarantee what another person will notice. Review side-view and on-foot photographs of the specific pair.

Are height increasing shoes comfortable?

They can be, when the shape, sizing and cushioning work for your feet. Judge the fit by toe space, heel hold and walking comfort rather than by the lift measurement alone.

Should I size up?

Not automatically. Follow the size guide for the model you choose, including its advice for customers between sizes. If you are unsure, contact Kosen with your usual size and fit concerns before ordering.

Which elevator shoes are suitable for formal occasions?

Jupiter is Kosen's dress-shoe option. Sneakers like Mercury or Venus may work for relaxed business dress codes, but formal settings can call for a dedicated dress shoe.

Find the right Kosen pair

Start with the setting where you will wear the shoes most: Mercury for a clean everyday look, Venus for sporty knit styling, Saturn for retro runners, Mars for bold streetwear or Jupiter for formal outfits. Then compare the size charts and product photography before deciding. All five are built around discreet elevation, but their fit and appearance are not interchangeable.
